Why Silent Discos Are My New Form Of Stress Relief
Recently I had the opportunity to attend my first silent disco at the OUE Skyspace in downtown Los Angeles. Since this was going to be my first experience I arrived having ZERO ideas on what to expect. My husband and I showed up and decided to go into it with an open mind.
We walked in the room, picked up our headphones, and immediately started switching between the three different stations that were offered.
Green station = Throwback classics
Red station = EDM
Blue station = Top 40 Hits
While my husband tuned into the red station, I clung to what I knew and stuck with the remixes of the blue station, knowing that I was more likely to let loose and dance to songs that were familiar. It took a while for us to even think about dancing. The room where the disco was held was huge and we got there just 30 minutes after the event started (that way if we ended up hating it, we could leave early enough to go and do something else with our night) so there were not very many people yet. We walked around, grabbed a couple of drinks and hit the photobooth.
After this we decided it was time to dive into the purpose of the event.
It was time to dance.
After the initial awkward phase of dancing to the beat of your music and forgetting that no one else could hear what you were hearing, we let go of the nerves and went all in.
We planned on staying for an hour tops and we ended up staying until our feet were begging for us to go home. We danced for hours. We laughed our faces off. We forgot about how tired we were when we showed up. And we had the most fun we’ve had in a long, long time with just the two of us.
There’s something to be said about learning to let go of what everyone else in the room is thinking about you. Allowing yourself to let down those walls that immediately go up inside your mind when you think you are acting foolish and remembering to just live in the moment was something I had not given myself for a while.
There’s something about dancing like no one is watching that can make you feel like a brand new person.
If you have been stressed with work, upset about your relationship becoming to boring, or you are just looking for a new adventure with your friends and loved ones find a silent disco in your area, throw on your dancing shoes and let loose for one night. You will not regret.
Every single person in that room with us had a huge smile on their face. It was like watching a bunch of adults remember what it feels like to be a kid again.
Don’t miss out on that feeling.
